(The world fawned over every detail of her luxurious 2023 wedding to Elliott Grainge on the French Riviera.) With a desire to take the results of her skincare routine to the level, Sofia met with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Mamina Turegano to learn more about the SkinCeuticals Integrated Skincare philosophy and receive her first-ever chemical peel.

The Consultation

An in-depth consultation that includes a skin assessment is one of the most important steps when exploring a professional treatment or procedure. It is essential that the provider understands the patient’s concerns and goals so she or he can explain the benefits and any other special considerations associated with a particular treatment.

SOFIA RICHIE GRAINGE: I’m so excited to meet you and pick your brain about all things skin. I have so many questions!

DR. MAMINA: Same here, Sofia. I’m happy to answer your questions and tell you more about SkinCeuticals.

Corrective moisturizers

RICHIE GRAINGE: I’ve dealt with skin struggles my whole life, and I went to the dermatologist for the first time when I was 13. It was actually my dad’s idea so I could get educated about my skin and be taught how to take care of it. Actually, my first dermatologist recommended SkinCeuticals so it’s been in my routine ever since because it’s worked for me.

DR. MAMINA: That’s great. Everyone should feel empowered to take care of their skin, even from a young age.

RICHIE GRAINGE: I’ve had a routine for as long as I can remember, but I think it’s all about consistency. When do you think is an appropriate time to start using a skincare routine?

Corrective moisturizers

DR. MAMINA: I get this question a lot, and I think the right time is when you start to notice changes. This can be as young as the pre-teen or teenage years, when a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen should be enough. Once someone gets to their twenties, they can start looking at problem-focused or anti-aging skincare.

RICHIE GRAINGE: I went to see this dermatologist because of my teenage acne, which settled down a bit in my early twenties. But about a year ago, I started experiencing dermatitis breakouts. I’m working more so maybe it’s the makeup brushes or different products that I’m experimenting with. It also happens when the seasons change. My problem area is around my mouth, and when I break out it automatically happens here. For some reason, I’m also having flare-ups on my temples, which I never had before.

DR. MAMINA: Dermatitis can be due to a variety of different causes. When I hear you experience breakouts from using different products and when the weather changes, it sounds like your skin is a bit more sensitive than it usually is—and that’s normal. Any changes, such as different products or shifts in weather can be a shock to the skin and affect the skin barrier. This can make the skin susceptible to other things like breakouts.

RICHIE GRAINGE: My skin is really dry but at the same time it’s really oily, which is really confusing. I’ve heard so many different things like use more products and use less products, and I find personally that less is more.

DR. MAMINA: Any time someone is dealing with irritation, I tell them to tone it down and keep their routine super-simple. Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer and that’s it. Keep things minimal until your skin heals and then slowly add your other products back in.

RICHIE GRAINGE: I also have some scars from my teenage acne. Are there any products you would recommend for me? I’m always open to trying new things.

DR. MAMINA: To keep your skin looking nourished and hydrated, I’m a huge fan of SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2. It’s a beautiful cream that matches the ratio of lipids—specifically cholesterol, ceramides, and fatty acids—in your skin barrier. It’s going to really work to restore your skin barrier. It also improves fine lines and texture, and is shown to reduce the appearance of pores by 44% after 8 weeks.

RICHIE GRAINGE: I didn’t know that. I’ll try it.

DR. MAMINA: It’s also really important to wear sunscreen every day, even if you aren’t going outside. With consistent daily use, you’re going to help prevent accelerated signs of aging like dark spots and wrinkles. And, of course, it has the added bonus of helping to prevent skin cancer.

RICHIE GRAINGE: I’ve read that SPF can have serious anti-aging benefits.

DR. MAMINA: It’s true! In addition to a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen, if you want to do more to boost skin radiance, I definitely recommend incorporating an antioxidant serum in the morning. One of the most potent antioxidants is vitamin C, and SkinCeuticals has one of the best serums. It’s called C E Ferulic®.

Corrective moisturizers

RICHIE GRAINGE: I love C E Ferulic® so much. It’s my favorite product.

DR. MAMINA: C E Ferulic® works with your sunscreen to fight the damage caused by environmental stressors like UV rays, pollution, cigarette smoke, and all the other things that can affect the skin barrier. It also works to help fight the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. On the superficial level it helps even out skin tone for bright, radiant skin.

RICHIE GRAINGE: And would you say that it’s safe for people with sensitive skin?

DR. MAMINA: Yes, it’s not going to cause breakouts or flare-ups. You just want to use a few drops and follow that with sunscreen in the morning.

RICHIE GRAINGE: Which professional procedure would you recommend for my skin?

DR. MAMINA: Since you’re young, I think a chemical peel would be great to start with. Because you have a history of sensitive skin, I’m going to keep it on the gentle side. The SkinCeuticals peel I’m thinking about for you is called the Gel Peel GL. It combines glycolic and lactic acids to exfoliate surface cells, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, improve discoloration, reduce irritation, and hydrate the skin, so it will address the acne as well as the different concerns you’ve brought up.

RICHIE GRAINGE: Will that help my acne scars?

DR. MAMINA: Chemical peels help improve skin texture, including acne scars. They also help with discoloration, fine lines, and wrinkles as well.

RICHIE GRAINGE: I’m excited… This is going to be great! I’ve never gotten a chemical peel before so I don’t know what to expect. What can I do before the procedure to really get the best results?

DR. MAMINA: One product I’d like you to use before your peel is the Cell Cycle Catalyst. It will help accelerate skin cell turnover. It also helps your skin absorb the peel better while doing other good things like improving fine lines and smooth your skin. The other product I want you to use every day is the C E Ferulic®. In addition to helping to protect your skin from environmental stressors, it will really help prime your skin.

RICHIE GRAINGE: As a dermatologist, I’m sure you’ve tried thousands of products. Why do you like SkinCeuticals?

DR. MAMINA: One of the reasons I love SkinCeuticals and why so many dermatologists love SkinCeuticals is because of the science and research behind their formulas and ingredients. We know these ingredients work, which is why we see results.

Integrated Skincare

SkinCeuticals believes that the key for long-lasting, comprehensive skin-improvement results is a combination of professional procedures and at-home skincare designed to complement the results achieved with office-based treatments.

DR. MAMINA: SkinCeuticals pioneered something called Integrated Skincare. This means that their products are formulated to complement the outcome and help minimize the downtime of procedures like lasers, peels, micro needling, or injectables.

RICHIE GRAINGE: Wow… So much science! What kind of procedures?

DR. MAMINA: When you use SkinCeuticals products with things like chemical peels, lasers, microneedling, and injectables, they complement the outcomes and can help provide even better results. Integrated Skincare also includes prepping the skin for procedures. For example, if a patient is getting a chemical peel, I’ll have them prep with a gentle exfoliating product like Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight to prime the skin. Then after the peel, they can use C E Ferulic® and it will really get into the skin. About a week or so after a peel, you can add in other products to help you reach your skin-improvement goals.

RICHIE GRAINGE: I never really thought about how combining products with procedures gives you more bang for your buck and more comprehensive results than using either alone.

Post-procedure Skincare

The proper at-home skincare routine is key for optimizing the results of any professional procedure. Your SkinCeuticals skincare professional will customize your post-treatment routine for your unique skin concerns and goals.

RICHIE GRAINGE: I’m a planner and I like to be prepared. So what should my routine be for taking care of my skin at home?

DR. MAMINA: For your daily routine, I recommend washing your face daily with the Simply Clean gel cleanser. In the morning, you’re going to apply C E Ferulic® to clean skin. Then comes H.A. Intensifier in the morning and at night. I love this product because it actually increases the level of hyaluronic acid in your skin’s upper layer by up to 30%. Your skin is going to be nice and hydrated and smooth.

RICHIE GRAINGE: Perfect. Great.

DR. MAMINA: Then you are going to moisturize with Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 to help restore your skin barrier and smooth your skin texture. Every morning you’ll top this off with Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50. It’s a lightweight tinted formula that blends in really well with the skin. Another option is Daily Brightening UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 30. This one helps protect your skin from sun damage and brightens at the same time.

RICHIE GRAINGE: Amazing. I always need a good sunscreen.

DR. MAMINA: I’m going to call this routine “The Sofia.”

RICHIE GRAINGE: You’re so sweet, thank you!
